A Look at Famous Women

International Women’s Day is observed annually on March 8 throughout the world. The event invites people from all cultures and countries to celebrate the advancement made in women’s rights, encourage calls for social change, and honor famous women in history whose uniquely courageous acts helped shape future of women’s rights. The day is an ideal way to coincide with International Women’s History Month. The spirit behind this important day is to celebrate the achievements and expansion of women’s rights worldwide. The day is a chance to highlight individual achievements and contributions of women globally, to increase the number of women in business, politics, and other public roles, and to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women.

 

This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the first woman US Senator, Barbara Boxer. On this day, millions of people across the globe will look towards their TVs, radios, computers, and laptops to catch a glimpse of the legendary first lady. Among the notable figures who have celebrated the historic event include the first lady of Spain, Camille Paglia; first lady of France, Chita Wilson; singer Madonna; and television showstress Oprah Winfrey. Other notable personalities who have graced the occasion are the first lady of Burma, Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad; President of Panama, Juan Carlos Vela; and Prime Minister of Singapore S. Rajaratnam. International Women’s History Month is observed across the globe as a means to bring people together to celebrate women’s historical achievements and contributions.

 

International Women’s History Month highlights the different spheres of activity and development that have changed the world over. In the past, the month has focused on famous women within the realm of politics, business, and different sectors of society. However, in today’s world, it has also widened to include popular women within the different spheres of entertainment and popular culture. A variety of celebrations are held to mark the historic day and its different manifestations.
